What is AVATAR?

There has been a question on how to aquire and load AVATAR pics...

can you give us the stoopid version and hints on where to find kewl pics that are within the size requirments for AVATAR... and how do we get them loaded up over here and added to our profiles?

If we take pics at the DW can we add them to our post? How?

Well those like me that are Charmed watchers would know that Leo can tell what an Avatar is better than I.


Notice my little guy pecking away at the computer on the left below my name. That is an avatar and it could be anything your heart wants it to be. To access the setup of this click the "Profile" link up top, this will take you to your profile setup. Notice everything you can fill in here. Everyone should fill out the lines here with current information. At the bottom you will find the avatar section this is where you deal with this graphic. I am on my way out the door and when I return I give a step by step play on how to use this for everyone. Catch y'all this afternoon.

YEAH!!! I tried my hand at it yesterday and I found some things, but when I went to submit it it said it needed to be 6k or under......tried resizing, but got the same thing..........not doing something right! I would appreciate the toopid version too! Thanks Cyber!!! :)

I think I might be able to help a lil bit here or at least i will try:

as cyber said there are already preset/loaded avatars to chose from under your profile by selecting show gallery, however if you are wanting something new or different it is possible to upload an avatar from your pc.

the avatar will have be a certain size (see below for size limits)anyways i did a search for free ava's here is a link(there are a lot of free sites i found on the google search, I am useing this one as an example, i found the lips on this site and so far all the ava's have been the right size to upload) as i have No idea how to resize a pic this was the easy way for me

In the middle of that page you can view all of this sites free ava's
when you find one you like right click on the pic/ava and save to your computer(save it like in a new folder or some place you will find it easily)

Once you have it saved come back to your profile page here on pride and scroll down your profile page to where you see this:

Avatar control panel
Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 80 pixels, the height no greater than 80 pixels, and the file size no more than 6 KB.

Upload Avatar from your machine: BROWSE

click on the word browse, you will now be able to search for the ava's you just saved to your pc, find the one you want and double click it which will bring you back to your profile page then click submit if your ava fell into the correct size limitations you should now be able to view a new ava under your name.

Ok does that make sense? Did i just confuse you more? Let me know I will try and help the best I can

p.s. PLEASE right click and save any and all pics to your computer by right clicking on a pic and choosing save picture as, rather than right clicking on the image and choosing properties hence allowing you to copy the image url for that website, this is considered stealing bandwidth and it really does slow down the sight where you are getting your pics

Well, this isn't the one I wanted.......but it will do until Cyber comes back and tells us how to resize! I think the one I wanted was 110 x 116 pixels.......too big!

once there you will see drop down boxes along top of screen
click on the first one and scroll down to "open" click on it it will automatically take you to the next page

next click on browse from you computer and find the image to upload from your pc double click it then click on upload

once the site uploads your pic click on the next drop down menu(it will say edit) and click resize(again the page will automatically turn for you)

click yes to Maintain original aspect ratio then under new size for Width: put 80 and height put 80 then click submit

once your newly resized pic is done just right click it to save it to your pc
I did it twice and if i could do it I know you both can....

Georgie this was AWSOME and fun. Did you see how many hits this topic has had? I just knew I wasn't the only one stumbling around trying to learn this putering stuff. When I do finaly figure stuff out there is no way I could share what I have done. It's just all MAGIC :shock:
I like the emoticans ... they are goofey and silly and I wish we had more.

Angilisa this old dog did learn a new trick. I now always hit PREVIEW instead of SUBMIT to see if the colors and fonts are what I wanted and then correct and play with my post before I SUBMIT. I have even learned to use EDIT for when I discover a post where I KANT spell and want to correct it.

Oh My Gawd! Y’all are so active on this topic; I guess I need to have an online class more often. Sorry that I did not get back yesterday afternoon, I kind of got busy, it’s like Eureka Springs is all of the sudden gearing up for a season. YEAH!!! The phone is ringing once again!!!! Okay, now to the point at hand.

Lets start, and I see y’all are already going in the right direction here with the right click save thing. I have been making a library for about 10 years now of little animated graphics off the web and other places. Most do not conform to the 80X80 6KB settings. It will be by far much easier to find a graphic that meets these specs. If you just can not find it in 80 x 80 then it can be reduced. Now when you modify any graphic chances are it will not look the same. Many times it just looses its good look or quality, so all you can do it try. Tools needed for this are a computer with graphics editing software installed, brain, and good eye for graphics. Now many of you are saying what graphic editor? Well that is open to what you have to work with, I personally use Adobe Photoshop 7 or Adobe Image Ready. These programs are quite costly if you purchase them retail. I would suggest that you find a hacker buddy and get it black market or find a similar graphic editor type program. Many scanners come with OEM software that will do the trick.
What we want to do is open the graphic that is too big and changes its size. To do so find in the menu system of this editor where you can change the image size, some software refers to this as canvas size, never the less this will be how we can achieve the change. Once the graphic has been set to the proper size save the file as a new name and it should be ready. Now I know these instructions a very open ended, but I can not tell everyone how to use there own software because there are way too many flavors out there.
Once you have an Avatar that will work, there are a couple of ways to get it out there for the bbs to use. 1. You can just upload it to eurekapride.com server, keep in mind that one of the cost of hosting a web site is the amount of space used by the site. Lita foots the bill for this site and I do not want to use her space, but some people have no choice but to do so. That is what the first two avatar blanks are for. The first is to load right out of your computer to the eurekapride.com site. Just click browse and fine the graphic file on your computer and upload it. The second is to pull the graphic from another site out on the web. To use this you must give the full URL (Universal Resource Locator) path, i.e. http://www.cyberphillics.com/geekpics/geek.gif. Most of the time when you find a picture you like on a site you can do a right click on that picture and choose properties from the menu, this will show the exact address of that image. Drag your mouse, while holding down the left mouse button, over the address and it should scroll if too long to fit in the display window. This will highlight the text, and then right click on the highlighted text, and you must do that right click on the text other wise you loose the selection. If done correctly you will get a menu that has a copy option on it, choose copy. Go to the second line of the avatar section on eurekapride.com and right click the blank line, choose paste off that menu. You have just told it where to find the picture and it can now process.
The third method of posting an avatar is how I do it. I store the graphic on my server and just link back to it from eurekapride.com, as someone pulls up a topic that I have posted too eurekapride.com will load everything it hold and call my server for the graphic file associated with my post. This does not use space or bandwidth on Lita’s server, plus I retain complete control over my graphic.
I hope these directions help many of you and you can put some graphics in to your future post. I can answer computer questions much better in person so catch me on DW and let me know if I helped you with this information. You will recognize me by the camera in front of my face recording all of you having fun. I also have to put this plug in the new http://www.tikitorchclub.com web site went active yesterday. Hermit and I were finalizing it and time got away on details.
