WHAT'S NEW AT THE MOVIES:

a look at new gay and lesbian films

AMOS LASSEN

This year is going to be marked by a slew of new gay and lesbian films and we can only hope that we will have the chance to see a few of them here in Little Rock. Since "Brokeback Mountain" lit up screens, gay film has become legitimized but unlike "Brokeback", the tears to be shed this coming year will be tears of laughter.

Starting off is "Puccini for Beginners" which focuses on women in love who struggle not with their sexuality but with making a commitment. In the ongoing struggle, the movie deals not so much with lesbianism--even though the characters are lesbians--but with the emotional differences between men and women. "D.E.B.S." is a satire of ""Charlie's Angels" and relates the saga of young schoolgirls who are groomed by a secret government agency to become members of "Discipline, Energy, Beauty, Strength" an elite national-defense group.

"Another Gay Movie" tells of four close friends who vow to lose gay virginity by the end of the summer. It follows the slapstick lead of "There's Something About Mary: and "Date Movie". And there is "Coffee Date" about a straight guy whose brother fixes him on a blind date-----with a gay man.

Whatever can the title :"Guys and Balls" be about? If you guessed soccer you are close as soccer is the backdrop of the movie but the balls are not always soccer balls. An all queer team of soccer wanabes--all of whom are terrible players--comes together because of a grudge. There is ball playing on the field as well as in the locker room.

"Adam and Steve" is a romantic comedy which has a great premise but little promise. The early reviews have not been kind as the plot seems contrived but everyone agrees that the dance numbers are wonderful. "The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green" is based on the comic strip of the same name ad also hs not been treated nicely by critics. Nevertheless, it is bound to become the new cult movie much as "Sordid Lives" has been up until now.

If you saw "Eating Out" an extra dessert is added in "Eating Out 2" which deals with playing gay to get the girl. "Dirty Laundry" is about an African American writer who goes to the South to visit his family which he hasn't seen in a ten years. His coming out, at home, in the Bible Belt. causes drama both within his family and at the church.

New documentaries include "Meth" about the spiraling upward use of crystal meth among gay men, "Wrestling with Angels: Playwright Tony Kushner" follows the author of "Angels in America" from 2003 to 2004. Another interesting documentary is "Small Town Gay Bar" which captures people who put their lives on the line to meet friends for a drink and "Saint of 9/11" the story of the openly gay priest killed at the World Trade Center after giving the last rites to some of the victims of the terrorist attack. For the ladies there is "Women in Love: Lesbian Sex Revolution in San Francisco" which is a riveting biography of a group of sexually radical lesbians.

New full length dramas are as diversified as ever. "Cold Showers" is a new French film and is a coming of age story which revolves around two good looking men and a beautiful girl who love each other equally. "The D Word: A Parody of that Other Sapphic Series" is a dramatic comedy about a group of young gay women as they move through their lives of work and sex. "summer Storm" is a German flick and is another coming of age story dealing with the way a straight boy reacts when he learns that his best friend is gay.

Finally there is "Girl Play" a hot lesbian drama, a personal story of feminist writers who met and fell in love while rehearsing a play in which they were cast as lovers. It looks like a really good year for film and the varieties are amazing. All we need is a chance too see them.

Guys and Balls is on my list of movies to see when it comes out on DVD. There is another movie coming out I want to see as well.

Poster Boy seems to be a very compelling story. We had saw the preview when going to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2, and I have since read more about it online.
