ADAM AND STEVE
NEW ON DVD
I suspect that most of you are so "over" that tired fundamentalist rant, "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." Leave it to the film industry to give us "Adam and Steve", an offbeat irreverent comedy released this week on DVD. This is just one of the new wave of gay films heading out way this summer.
"Adam and Steve" opened in movie houses to only lukewarm reviews and watching the movie I can understand why it was lost on the big screen. Watching it on TV in the comfort of your own place gives the film a new dimension and makes it that much more personal. Starring Craig Chester and Parker Posey "Adam and Steve" is full of laughs and is just plain good fun. Put your popcorn in the microwave, open a brew and sit back and get ready for more than an hour of gay comedy.
The story line is simple--boy meets boy, boy dates boy (disastrously), boy and boy split up and then meet 17 years later and fall in love. The film is in that genre of the "hopelessly optimistic" love story. It as if you feel while watching it that you have to find a partner. But in finding that partner you must expect cynicism and ego damage. "Adam and Steve" is by means a romantic "fairy tale". It deals with the real issues of finding true love--cheating, drug abuse, boredom. It is filled with gross out humor but never offensive--it is provocative. Craig Chester, the writer, director and star of "Adam ad Steve" says that he wanted to make a gay movie without high romance and tears, with a great sense of humor---"with more heart and less irony". He wanted to make a movie that shows him as he is--a pretty funny guy. It is a movie about movies showing the obstacles to being in a relationship when you are gay and you can laugh at the world around you. To do this he went after a cast of top comics--himself, Posey, Sally Kirkland, Chris Kattan, Malcolm Gets and Julie Hagerty. In fact as I am writing this review I am still laughing at some of the jokes.
The DVD has several special features including a documentary on the making of the movie, a gag real and some really hot previews of coming attractions including a hysterical trailer for "Another Gay Movie". Also included is the director's commentary, deleted scenes and a special instructional video "How to Battle Dance" accompanied by the standout song of the film "Shit Happens." If you laugh at nothing else the lyrics to this number will have you aching with joy.
The movie begins with a pivotal gross-out scene and then moves into slapstick humor and slight gags. There is a running joke when a homophobic couple interrupt the romantic couple at every opportunity which sometimes gets a little too silly. Putting that aside, the movie is a riotous experience and sure to make us single guys explore the options very carefully before entering a relationship.
