“OPEN CAM”
Death on the Net
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
Take one broken hearted good looker named Manny, add his internet love life and stir in the fact that his former tricks have all been murdered while on cam and you have the plot of “Open Cam: from Wolfe Video. I have been trying to get on Wolfe’s reviewers list to no avail. In fact, I actually had to buy this movie myself and while the money was not wasted, it was not the wisest purchase I have ever made. Now this is not a bad movie by any means, just a bit amateurish. I found most of the acting to be rather flat but the plot is great and despite my irritation with the delivery of several of the cast, I actually enjoyed this film. Some of the frontal nudity is quite good but just when you expect to really get a good look, the camera pans away and you are left moaning.
After a near fatal attack on Manny’s ex-b0yfriend, Maurice, the wave of brutality in the gay online community comes under investigation and Manny and the investigating office pursue more than a casual interest in each other. Manny, however, is not interested in a relationship and doesn’t seem to want to have sex with anyone more than once. He would go to this regular internet chat room, D.C. Dick, where guys jerk off on camera and any subtlety is placed aside. Suddenly some of the guys in the chat room meet with untimely ends—while on camera. Hamilton, the investigator, poses as Manny’s love interest in an attempt to find out why Manny’s former one nigh stands are kicking up their heels to the daisies. Herein, the questions come. Will the killer be caught? Will Manny fall for Hamilton? It’s a fun mystery that deserves to be seen (and the guys are all good lookers).
There are parts of the film that are smart, sexy, challenging and fast. What was missing was an explanation of the relationship between the characters which was just glossed over. The movie is a reflection of what goes on during internet addiction. It is entertaining and though provoking and the eye candy makes it a good bet. With a little more skill in editing, a little classier acting, we would have had a first rate film here but it still a good show.
