John Cameron Mitchell set out to make a film about sex, with the actors really having sex, but that has a plot. It was called the "Unnamed sex film project" in its development stages. Some people want to call "Shortbus" porn, others an "art house film." I kind of think that it is more art house then porn. The sex could be toned down and the film would still be like a Robert Altman ("The Player," "Shortcuts") or PT Anderson ("Boogie Nights," "Magnolia") film where many characters connect in some way with one another. There is straight and gay sex in the film, and the sex at the begining is a little shocking, but than it becomes as natural as the characters in the film.

It tells the story of Sophia, a sex therapist, who has never had an orgasim. During her journey to find the big "O" she meets James and Jamie (who are looking for a third), Severin (a dominatrix), and most importantly, Justin Bond (who makes his home a sexual palace called shortbus). It is at the shortbus that her sexual exploration begins. It ends with a nice emotional impact where many of the characters have an epiphany just like a Robert Altman or PT Anderson film.

"Shortbus" deserves to be seen. John Cameron Mitchell has created world full of characters that are very likeable. He also puts so much detail into the film it could be watched many times and still be fresh to the viewer.
