http://citizenchris.typepad.com/citizenchris/images/2008/04/29/lesbos.jpg (http://citizenchris.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/29/lesbos.jpg) "We're the true lesbians say islanders."
Who owns the word "lesbian"? Is it the people on the island of Lesbos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesbos_Island) or has its use become so widespread that anyone can claim it as their own?
Two inhabitants of Lesbos and a member of a Greek nationalist pagan association have filed a quixotic lawsuit (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23621323-12377,00.html) to ban the Greek Gay & Lesbian Union (OLKE) from bearing the name "lesbian."
Who knows the outcome of this. All I know is that when the International Olympic Committee sued the Gay Olympics over the name, we gays were told to cease and desist. A number of diners named Olympic and Olympia that had been operating for years also had to change their names. The IOC had done all the right things legally, like copyrighting and trademarking "Olympic."
Quick, someone trademark and copyright the name "gay" to protect us in case someone tries to say that word is theirs. You know, maybe the citizens of Gay, Ga. (http://georgia.hometownlocator.com/GA/Meriwether/Gay.cfm), will feel like taking it away from us some day.

Interesting. I thought the inhabitants of Lesbos were called Lesbosians (say 'Lesboshuns').

I saw Dear Abby on tv a number of years ago, talking about some of her more interesting letters. One read, "Dear Abby, our new neighbors, both women, have very short hair, wear men's clothing and drive trucks. Do you think they could be Lebanese?"

I can only imagine what the people of The Netherlands will be calling their dams in the future.
