I just attended the Out and Equal event on the Frito Lay campus in Plano,Tx.
Judy Shepard was the speaker.
Her introduction video and speech were both extremely powerful. Her speech addressed hate related behavior, irrespective of the victim. Texas made the video presentation. Jasper Texas, where James Byrd was chained to the back of a truck and dragged to his death by two white men – was one of the stories.
Judy shared experiences of her life since young Matt was brutally killed. Her strength and poise were inspiring. Additionally a prominent member of the Transgender community – Donna Rose – was in the audience. We spoke briefly – she’s a pleasant woman.
Finally, Frito-lay’s VP of HR spoke. Notable items : she discussed the difference between tolerance and acceptance. She challenged the audience to examine if the diversity directives are cascaded to middle management and are being followed outside the main campus. It made me curious as well.
Makes me want to thank you all for being your enlightened selves. As my bible thumping kin used to say – “You’ll have an extra jewel in your crown when you get to heaven.”
