My partner and I are coming to ES for DW this October, and we're really looking forward to it. We came last year for summer DW, and stayed at The Tradewinds, and had a nice time. I saw that the Tradewinds website is down, and heard it's changed hands since our last visit, so we're looking for a place to stay that we will feel comfortable at. We're looking for affordable, and hopefully a jacuzzi room. I'd love a gay-owned place, but will settle for gay-friendly. I tried Land O' Nod, but they are booked. Magnetic Valley Resort was booked. We booked a room at Rodeway Inn Swiss Resort as it offered a DW discount, but we're now concerned as the reviews we've read note that it is a popular biker destination, and that weekend there is apparently a biker group coming in. Nothing at all against bikers, but we're thinking about noise and such. Also one review noted that a confederate flag flies at this motel, which has given my African-American partner pause at staying there. So we're looking around some more. Are there any places you can recommend? Also, are there any hotel/motels that you would advise an interracial gay couple to avoid? Will Phillips, along with Constance McMillan and Ceara Sturgis, have been chosen as the Grand Marshal of Mid South Pride in Memphis, Tn.

The parade and festival are October 16th (no home game!) and promises to be alot of fun! Also, Robin McGehee, co founder of getEQUAL, is going to be the featured speaker.

The Mid South Pride group have been wonderful participants in NWA pride events, both in Fayetteville and in Eureka Springs. Since the parade is nearly 6 weeks away, this gives US all time to plan on going!

Here's the scoop....I plan to be at the Little Rock "Race For The Cure" on Saturday Morning with 2 co-workers, wearing gyant pink balloon hats like the one I wore to the Summer PDA. The race winds up around 9:30 ish and then I'm off to Memphis. The parade theme is "Come Together". Line up is at 3pm and kicks off at 4pm.

If you wanna be in the parade you can sign up to tote the gyant rainbow flag that came to Eureka for Eureka Gras 2009 or I can purchase us a spot...I do still have 2 gyant rainbow feather umbrellas, my pink and rainbow ribbon tux, and if I can find a way to bag up the 700 pink balloons from the Susan G koman gig, will cart them up to Memphis for parade hats. I plan to wear my NWA feathers again with the tights and matching opera gloves.

The Un-Natural State is a one-of-a-kind study of gay and lesbian life in Arkansas in the twentieth century, a deft weaving together of Arkansas history, dozens of oral histories, and Brock Thompson’s own story. Thompson analyzes the meaning of rural drag shows, including a compelling description of a 1930s seasonal beauty pageant in Wilson, Arkansas, where white men in drag shared the stage with other white men in blackface, a suggestive mingling that went to the core of both racial transgression and sexual disobedience. These small town entertainments put on in churches and schools emerged decades later in gay bars across the state as a lucrative business practice and a larger means of community expression, while in the same period the state’s sodomy law was rewritten to condemn sexual acts between those of the same sex in language similar to what was once used to denounce interracial sex. Thompson goes on to describe several lesbian communities established in the Ozark Mountains during the sixties and seventies and offers a substantial account of Eureka Springs’s informal status as the “gay capital of the Ozarks.”

Through this exploration of identity formation, group articulation, political mobilization, and cultural visibility within the context of historical episodes such as the Second World War, the civil rights movement, and the AIDS epidemic, The Un-Natural State contributes not only to our understanding of gay and lesbian history but also to our understanding of the South.

Brock Thompson received his PhD in American studies at King’s College, University of London. A native Arkansan, he now lives in Washington, DC, and works at the Library of Congress.
